Exfoliation FAQ’s
Q. What is Exfoliation?
A.Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells and build up from the outer layer of skin, also known as the epidermis. This process prevents clogged pores, reduce dullness, even skin tone, and increase hydration by allowing serums and other products absorb deeper into the skin.
Q. How many method of exfoliation are there?
A. There are two types of Exfoliation. Physical and Chemical. Both share the same goal- speed cell turnover, and leave skin brighter, softer, and smoother.
Physical Exfoliation refers to manually rub the product into the skin to allow the particles to do their job or buff away dead skin. Exfoliating face wash or face scrubs are good example of physical exfoliation. These products typically contain small particles such as coffee, jojoba beads, or sugar granules.
If you choose exfoliating face wash, avoid harsh ingredients such as crushed fruit pits or nutshells. These are larger particles and they can be abrasive and cause ‘micro’ tears in the skin which will damage your skin barrier.
Other examples of physical exfoliation are microdermabrasion and dermaplaning. Microdermabrasion uses a minimally invasion instrument to remove the thicker, outer layer of skin. Result in softer, smoother, and more even toned skin.
Deramplaning is a non-invasive, gentle exfoliation method that removes dead skin build and fine hair known as ‘peach fuzz’. This popular method of exfoliation will result in softer, more hydrated, and smoother skin.
Chemical Exfoliation refers to chemical exfoliants known as AHAs, BHA, or enzymes. These ingredients dissolve the “glue” that binds your dead skin cells, helping them loosen and slough off the skin surface.
Q. How often should I exfoliate?
A.Depend on your skin type. General guideline for exfoliation is 1-2 times/ week for dry or sensitive skin. And 1-3 times/week for normal to oily skin.
Always discuss with your esthetician to see which method, and how often you should exfoliate as you do not want to over exfoliate and damage your skin barrier.
Q. What happen when I over exfoliate?
A.Over Exfoliation compromises skin barrier and strips the skin of its natural oils. The result of over exfoliation can be dehydration, broken capillaries, and even acne breakouts. Symptoms of over exfoliation is red, flaky, dry patches, your skin may become more ‘sensitive’ to other skincare products that previously didn’t cause an issue.
