To Peel or Not to Peel?? Everything you need know about Chemical Peels

Q.What are Chemical Peels?

A. Chemical peels are a cosmetic treatment that uses an acid solution to remove damaged skin cells, revealing a healthier, younger-looking skin.

Chemical peels are excellent treatments for

  • Acne

  • Hyperpigmentation

  • Acne scars

  • Redness

  • Sun Damage

  • Wrinkles and Fine Lines

Despite the name "chemical," most peels are composed of natural fruit acids and not harmful chemicals as one might assume.

Common ingredients you will find in chemical peels are

  • Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) - a combination of five different acids derived from natural sources. Glycolic Acid comes from sugar cane, Citric Acid from citrus fruit, Malic Acid from apples, Tartaric Acid from grapes, and Lactic Acid from sour milk.

Benefits: smooths skin and increases collagen production; ideal for new peel users

  • Beta Hydroxy Acid-popularly known for its key component Salicylic acid, is derived from willow bark.

Benefits: deeply cleanses and exfoliates; recommended for oily skin

  • Enzyme Peel-a skin exfoliating treatment that offers a brighter complexion by utilizing fruit enzymes (proteins).Enzyme peels exfoliate the skin by eliminating dead skin cells and simultaneously nourishing the new layer of skin that emerges; great for sensitive skin and for expecting or nursing mothers.

Chemical Peel level and strength

Chemical peels vary in strength, which determines how deeply they penetrate the skin. Light peels only target the outermost layer of skin, whereas stronger peels penetrate deeper to remove damaged skin cells.

Chemical peels are categorize into 4 levels

Very Superficial

  • Remove the outermost layer

  • No downtime

  • Great for first time client

Superficial

  • Little to no down time

  • Light flaking for a few days post peel

  • Great results when skin has been prepped

Medium

  • Exfoliates all layer of the epidermis

  • Skin MUST be prepped for 2-3 weeks prior to treatment

  • 7-10 days downtime

  • Skin will flake to peel (shedding)

Deep

  • Extensive down time

  • ONLY performed by a physician

To determine the appropriate strength level, we must consider both the desired results and the condition of your skin.

During chemical peel treatment you may experience

  • Itching/ prickling

  • Some heat sensation

  • Flushing or slight swelling

  • Mild tenderness or sensitivity

  • Tightness

How much sensation you feel will depend on the peel level.

*Not feeling any sensation does not mean the peel is not working. The gradual but effective outcome of peels is due to the way they work on a cellular level.

Q. Does Sonder Esthetics and Nail Care offer any very superficial to superficial peel?

A.Our treatments, the Custom Gentle Peel and Sonder Signature Facial, offer peels of a very superficial to superficial strength. These treatments are tailored to your skin type and sensitivity, ensuring excellent outcomes with minimal to no downtime necessary.

Q.How should I prep my skin for chemical peel?

A. To prepare your skin for superficial- medium dept peel, your home care should include “active” ingredients to promote cell turn over, and protect your skin from hyperpigmentation.

Radiant Serum and Pigment Brightening Serum are great products to include in your routine at least 3 weeks before your treatment. These products will delicately exfolaite dead skin buildup, reduce sun damage, and provide protection against harmful free radicals.

Q. What to do after chemical peel treatment?

  • Limit sun exposure. It's important to remember the significance of sun protection, especially when dealing with skin. That's why some skincare professionals recommend chemical peels during the colder months, as there's less exposure to the sun. Wear SPF and reapply every two hours, if you plan to be outside.

  • Do NOT pull on dry (peeling) skin. For the best outcome, let your skin flake off naturally. Pulling at it might spoil the fresh, new layer beneath.

  • Consider using skin soothing products like Daily Skin Clarifier and Ultra Hydro Gel to keep the skin hydrated and reduce hyperpigmentation.

Chemical peels are an excellent way to address a variety of skin concerns, including fine lines, wrinkles, acne and hyperpigmentation. Does it sound like the right treatment for you? Why not book a Free Consultation today to learn more or address any concerns you may have.
